I agree with everyone here who says that when Apple starts their own movie store they should also release a new Application along with it.

Playing video in iTunes is pretty bad.

They could call it iMovie... wait that won't work.

iFlix (too netflix-ee)? iPix(too pixarish)? iMedia (too micro$oftish)? nah.. just stick with iTunes... everybody knows how to use it, but fix the video playback.

With few details available, the validity of this remains uncertain, but Electronista claims (http://www.electronista.com/articles/06/08/30/apple.sept.12.press.event/) that Apple may be holding a special press event on September 12th, 2006 based on an "official" email sent to Your Mac Life.

The date corresponds to the start of Apple Expo Paris (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060821202913.shtml) which runs from September 12th to 16th. It has already been announced, however, that there will be no Keynote event for the Apple Expo.

Meanwhile, Businessweek (http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/aug2006/db20060831_806225.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index_businessweek+exclusives) also places an announcement from Apple in the same time frame. According to their sources, Apple plans to start offering Movie downloads through iTunes in mid-September.

Finally, many users are expecting (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060814180417.shtml) Apple to release Core 2 Duo based laptops in September, but no further hints of this have been revealed.

Update: Mac4Ever is also reporting that Apple will be hosting a September 12th Event which will take place in San Francisco and be streamed to London.

Update 2: MacBidouille confirms that there will be a Keynote in San Francisco that will be relayed to London.
    - It was originally reported that Steve jobs will not deliver a Keynote at Apple Expo. He will indeed not be in Paris; but a Keynote will be organized in cupertino and relayed in London at Apple Europe HeadQuarter, where journalists have already been invited. There will are not relay organized at AppleExpo

Come off it, cmaier has a darn good point. Apple is being utterly ridiculous in this debacle between themselves and Rogue Amoeba. There was no reason at all that such a debate should have evolved into a 3 month conflict, nor was it that it should have ended with Rogue Amoeba having to indulge their customers in a battle with Apple over icons. Having user interface unity is something Apple strives for in all of their products. By giving 3rd party developers the ninth degree over something so ingrained in this product is simply stupid. It does nothing to help the end user, ingrain the confidence of developers, or aid Apple. It just brings out end users and developers with grievances and sharpened pitchforks.
Dude. You have a double standard. If Apple were to infringe on the copyright of someone else, you would be here pitchfork in hand screaming for blood.

If you look on other sites like macnn, you will see that the airfoil app does not only display Apple icons but rather the icon of whatever browser is configured as the main browser. They cannot make the claim that they have to right to use the Firefox, Camino or Omniweb icon in their app. It is not "streaming" the icon data, it is copied over and displayed superimposed on another icon which is presumably an internal OS X bundle. The audio is streamed but those icons are copied over and superimposed on each other on the phone. That is a clear violation of the IP of other programs in a manner that is not consistent with use on the mac it was pulled from.

That's nice from Apple, I personally find the Magic Mouse useless for what I do, it's just a nice toy. And a Trackpad would be more useful just for the Multitouch Gestures in combination with a Real Mouse

Apple keeps burning bridges and eventually it's going to come back to bite them in the ass. Samsung is holding all the cards here. Apple needs Samsung but Samsung doesn't need Apple. I wouldn't be surprised if Sammy has some unexpected production issues with ipad parts here shortly.

A few examples: Look up Leap-A and Inqtana-A on OSX (very real OSX worms), MusMinim-A (recent trojan).

Leap-a required authentication to infect and spread via iChat given that iChat is owned by System but is only run with user privileges. It did NOT achieve privilege escalation via exploitation.

Inqtana-a was a proof of concept that could only modify the user level of the system because didn't achieve privilege escalation via exploitation. Malware can NOT install rootkits or keyloggers that can hook into apps owned by System (such as Safari, Mail, & etc) with only user level access.

MusMinim-a is also a beta proof of concept based of a legitimate piece of software ported from Windows (http://www.darkcomet-rat.com/). It requires authentication to install given that it does NOT achieve privilege escalation via exploitation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware#Threats (List of Malware threats on Linux; why not pretend they don't even exist?)

You do realize most of those are proof-of-concepts generated through research. Most were never present in the wild and did NOT achieve privilege escalation via exploitation. Two that were in the wild are Bliss (1997 - ineffective as did not include privilege escalation) and Stoag (1996). https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Linuxvirus

It sounds good at first except for one giant pothole of a flaw. I mean why do things that are difficult to trace when you can just set up a sign on a server somewhere that says "Here's my bank account! Come and arrest me!" (i.e. the money is being redirected...follow the money trail!)

You do realize that the redirection of ad revenue is one of the primary means of profit generation of what has been referred to as the most advanced Windows rootkit. BTW, some variants achieve privilege escalation via exploitation (see the second link).

    http://www.brighthub.com/internet/google/articles/66090.aspx
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/16/tdl_rootkit_does_64_bit_windows/

Trojans are particularly a problem since a lot of programs ask for root password permission to be installed (including Apple software).

Untrue. Mac apps rarely ask for authentication to install if you install the app in the appropriate folder for the user account type.

the iPhone is going to be a useless product unless they release it in big enough sizes to replace my iPod. It's like carrying two ipods around. I already have a 60 gig...why would I spend the extra money to buy an expensive phone that only holds 5 gigs or something? It's just a dumb idea, unless they release major sizes that can replace the big ipods. I don't know why everyone is drooling over this thing.
ppl are going to want it because it's a phone. I will buy it for the look.

Not to mention that it completely ignores the differences in culture regarding transportation. America is set up with cars being the main type of transport. Most European countries don't have this set up.

    To some extent, sure.

The big difference is that in the UK you can get cars which do 55 miles per US gallon, one that does that - the 17,345 1.6 Econetic Ford Focus does nearly 62 miles per US gallon.

And that car is made by a US company.

Heck, my new 2.2 i7 quad MacBook Pro beats every one of the last Mac Pro revisions. The Mac Pro line is more and more for a very specialized audiencethose who need the utmost performance and expansion (2-3 video cards, an extra I/O card, 4x SSD drives for speed + space for high end production work...

You are kidding right? MBP's Geekbench score is around 11k, where the top end Mac Pro's perform close to 30k, that's almost 3 times as powerful as the fastest MBP.

    24 threads > 8 threads. :)

Maybe the reason for not having a traditional keypad is that this is actually the iPhone Shuffle.

Apple's market research team has concluded that people get tired of talking to the same people all time. And since the iPod Shuffle is such a hit playing songs randomly,
the new iPhone Shuffle will randomly dial numbers, so every call you make is never boring.

Got more than 240 numbers in your adressbook? No problem. Let iTunes autofill your iPhone shuffle and get a new telephonic experience every time. Mom follows Work. Home follows Pizza Parlor. iPhone shuffle loves to improvise. Take the Shuffle switch, for instance. Even if youve synced a particular call-list, you can shuffle numbers with a flick.

    ROFL:)

My phone does that now. Little did I know it is a *feature*.

You again with your ludicrous claims? What makes you think that Mac Pro is the fastest desktop there is? What is the secret ingredient that makes it faster than other machines, considering that it uses same components than others do? And since Mac Pro supports less RAM (16GB vs. 64GB) than Dell does (for example), how could you say that it's "the most powerful"? Compared to Dell, it will be dog-slow for tasks that require a lot of RAM.

Now, I hate Windows and I use it at work because I have no choice. An there are plenty of bad things in it. But I don't get any BSODs. I really don't. Back when I used a desktop, I sometimes left the machine running for weeks and I had no problems.

When was the last time you used Windows? Back in Windows ME-days?

Seriously: I think you should take a chill-pill an dial-back that fanboyishness of yours.

Evangelion, I was picking on Aiden (as I always do) and we are normally able to exchange silly arguments with no fighting...

Could you just calm down and shut up for now? Really, go spend your posts on other people...no need to worry about my "fanboy" behavior...after all, this is a forum devoted to Mac fans and rumors...so please leave if you don't like it.

If it destroys their whole business model, then it is not dumb to not "try it out".

Apple is clearly not interested in the subscription or rental business models.

    edit: Clarity
How does it destroy 'their whole business model'? I just think there has to be differentiation between movies and songs. Wheras I have no interest whatsoever (and never will) in renting songs (read: subscription model), I do have an interest in renting movies. I can listen to the same song 10 times over in one day. Can I do the same with a movie? Yes. Will I? No.

I can count the number of movies I've watched more than twice on both my hands. So can a lot of people out there. If you're really interested in being a collector and keeping the movie, downloading it off iTMS is a dumb idea.

So is it dumb for Apple to ignore a market of people such as myself? Yes. Does it destroy their business model to offer movie rentals (NOT TV shows or music)? You explain that to me

Apple and MS haven't competed against each other since 1993. And back then it was still just on the OS.

Apple has always competed against the entire Wintel PC market...not just Microsoft's Windows OS.

It's all about 2 different business models, essentially centering at the OS:

1)Apple makes, sells, supports the Mac OS and Mac hardware

2)Microsoft, on the other hand, simply creates the OS and licenses it to hardware vendors.

Of course Microsoft is unhappy with this breaking news but they, again, are 2 completely different business models. One could write a small book on the topic.
Why is it all the intelligent posts come from people without solely Apple products littering their signature?

There's two things going on here...

    1) The user who posted about Apple not running MacExpo directly is dead-on. The Expos are of course related to Apple, but are not run by Apple. So decisions made about the day-to-day operations of booths, patrons, etc, are made in-house by whoever is directing that particular show. It's unfortunate that Apple is being thrown under the bus here because they really don't have anything directly to do with it.

    2) More importantly, the big problem is the loud minority that has emerged from within Greenpeace (and other similar organizations). There is a growing problem in this country of people taking the "one person can make a difference" idea and translating it into "act inapporpriately and without moral or social constraint, or you wont get noticed." This is GIANT problem. People aren't being held accountable for their actions anymore, especially when their actions are tied to some sort of noble cause.

It's almost is if you can perform some sort of illegal act, but if you say "I did it for Cancer" then you're off the hook, or somehow not at fault anymore. Getting attention for a good cause is wonderful, nobody denies that. But it has to be done the RIGHT way. Intelligently, and within the confines of what's ethical and legal. Otherwise, these groups that are railing against injustice, environmental negligence, or any other cause-du-jour, are just as bad and hypocritical as what they're railing against.

    Amen.

    Please bring back the 24"! 21" - too small. 27" - too big. 24" - just right!

I'm sticking with my 24" Core2Duo until a new 24" model is released.

+14ish. 24" is a sweet spot that i'm hoping makes its way back.

That's what i'm hoping for! I just got the word from work that they will give me some money to buy one so I can finally take my work homework on the weekends, and just in time apparently!

I believe this media player will simply be a better iPod with better integration to your television, via possibly a nice dock. It makes sense, it's keeps the iPod in the forefront which would enable the market to grow because most will buy it for the music, but seeing it can attach to the t.v... :)

Exactly what I was thinking I'd much rather have the 320M it makes youtube and other graphics accelerated apps so much better than the 9400M, can't imagine downgrading to igp.

Youtube is a problem. The Intel 3000HD still isn't supported by the Video Decode Acceleration Framework (VDA for short) that Apple released in 2010 to enable Adobe to implement hardware decoding of H.264 video. So right now, a MBA is offloading decoding to the nVidia 320M, while a new SB MBA would revert to standard CPU decoding, throwing us back to the dark ages of ****** Flash, where we now have passable Flash.

Here's another lawsuit. I had no idea where to post it, so here it is:

Apple requesting to drop a lawsuit: (poor google translation)

    Published: April 19, 2011 2:17 p.m.
    Last updated: April 19, 2011 2:17 p.m.
LONDON - Apple has asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit around iTunes. The case has dragged on since 2004.
     AP

A ruling on the application is expected next month.

The case dates from 2004. The company RealNetworks, owner of the then popular RealPlayer, sued Apple because the iPod can only sync music from iTunes.

Earlier, the company succeeded at an iPod 'crack' so that all music formats were playable. Apple reacted furiously.

    Steve Jobs

Recently a judge is that Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, to appear in court because it already protracted process. Jobs is on sick leave for months and had previously agreed that he therefore was not required to testify.

The court held that Jobs considers the information required, however. The CEO then appeared at the beginning of this month, two hours in court for questioning. About his situation is nothing published.

    Quality

Apple's request to suspend the lawsuit claiming that iPods only raised a certain music format support for the quality.
